Bathside Bay Container Terminal Inquiry

A public inquiry (in effect, concurrent inquiries) closed on 21 October 2004 into the following applications relating to the development of a container port at Bathside Bay, Harwich:

By Hutchison Ports (UK) Ltd on behalf of Harwich International Port Ltd:

Town and Country Planning Act 1990 - for the construction and operation of the container port at (Appeal reference APP/P1560/A/03/1129387);

for the construction of a “small boat harbour” in the vicinity of Gas House Creek (Appeal reference APP/P1560/A/03/1129388), and

for the creation of compensatory intertidal habitats on land to the south east of Foulton Hall (Appeal reference APP/P1560/A/03/1134582).

Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 – for listed building consent for the partial demolition of pier attached to the Grade II listed Train Ferry Gantry structure at Gas House Creek (Appeal reference APP/P1560/E/03/1129386);

Parkeston Quay Act 1983 - for the carrying out of tidal works comprising the construction of a quay wall and reclamation of intertidal area at Bathside Bay; and

Coast Protection Act 1949 - for proposed managed realignment at Little Oakley, near Harwich.

On 26 January 2004 the Secretary of State for Transport announced that the inquiry will also consider the proposed Harwich Parkeston Quay Harbour Revision Order.

At the close of the inquiry the Inspector announced that he was likely to submit the report of the inquiry to the Planning Inspectorate by 10 March 2005. The report would then be passed to the Secretaries of State.
