Royal Town Planning Institute Awards

8 February 2002

Following the Royal Town Planning Institute President's Special Award to the Planning Inspectorate we have received a note of congratulations from Corinne Swain OBE, Chair of the Advisory Panel on Standards. Corinne Swain says 'The citation (high quality and consistent service and record of innovation in such areas as mediation, training, publicity and the Planning Portal Programme) covers issues dear to APOS' heart!".

The Advisory Panel is an independent body that oversees and reports on the quality of our work, and it is very pleasing to receive this further endorsement, which reflects on the work of The Planning Inspectorate and its staff.

I am very pleased to be able to say that the President's Special Award for planning achievement was presented to the Planning Inspectorate at the Royal Town Planning Institute . This award, which is presented to a planning organisation, rather than a specific scheme, represents the very high quality of work which the selected organisation has been responsible for not just in the previous year, but over a period of time.

The certificate says that the award is "For quality and innovation in decision making and administration".

The award therefore recognises the efforts not just of the nearly 300 Royal Town Planning Institute members who work for the Inspectorate, but of other Inspectors from different disciplines and of administrative staff. In the speech which was made by Nick Davis, reference was made to the quality and professionalism of our work, and of some recent initiatives like Mediation, the introduction of the Journal, and the Portal project.

I am very pleased with this award, and I hope that every member of staff will feel that their efforts and hard work have been recognised.
