Section 3 - Who We Are

The Planning Inspectorate is an Executive Agency of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM)Footnote 1 and the National Assembly for Wales (NAW).We have been an Executive Agency since 1992 but can trace our history back to 1909.

Our purpose is to decide a wide range of appeals and other casework under planning, housing, environmental and allied legislation. Apart from ODPM and NAW, we carry out similar work for other Government departments, particularly the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Department for Transport (DfT).

This is the Inspectorate’s Annual Report for 2005/06. It gives an overview of our performance in the year ending 31 March 2006: it is published in English and Welsh. The Report includes our Annual Accounts. It will be complemented by a separate Statistical Report, giving more detail of the casework we carry out, which will be published on our web site.
