Abercrombie LectureLeonora Rozee

Our Deputy Chief Executive and Visiting Professor to the School of Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Planning at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Leonora Rozee OBE, gave the 11th Abercrombie lecture at Liverpool University on 6 October 2008. The lecture series commemorates the outstanding contribution that Sir Patrick Abercrombie made to the study and practice of town and regional planning.

Leonora chose as her topic for the lecture “How planning can meet the challenges – in praise of local development frameworks”. Her lecture explored the challenges faced by the planning system in the 21st century and how it is responding. The particular focus of the lecture was the evolving spatial planning system in England which was introduced by the 2004 Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act. Her aim was to show that the Act provides a statutory framework with the capability of delivering an effective plan-led process.

Leonora’s lecture was well received by the mixed audience of students, academics and practitioners who attended the recently refurbished Victoria Gallery and Museum on the University campus. It is to be published in Town Planning Review, published by the Liverpool University Press in the near future.
