Planning Appeals - Wales
Table 10 gives details of planning appeals received, withdrawn, decided and allowed during the year in Wales together with the number of cases in hand. The number of appeals received in 2000-2001 was down by 7.5% on the previous year, and the decisions issued fell by 0.2%.

During the year 99.7% of appeals decisions were made by Inspectors with the remainder decided by the National Assembly for Wales.

The percentage of appeals decided by the three procedure types is shown in Chart 4. Written representation and inquiry appeals are split between those determined by Inspectors and the National Assembly. All hearing appeals were decided by Inspectors.

Tables 12, 13 and 14 show the number of appeals decided by written representations, inquiries and hearings respectively. Tables 12 and 13 give a further breakdown between those determined by the National Assembly for Wales and Inspectors. Numbers allowed are also shown.

The Inspectorate's performance against appeals targets is measured as the time taken to determine 80% of appeals in a given number of weeks. The targets for planning appeal work in Wales were to determine 80% of written representation cases within 17 weeks, hearings cases within 22 weeks and inquiry cases within 30 weeks. Chart 5 shows the 80% handling times by procedure type for Inspector cases over the last 5 years. On the same basis, performance on cases determined by the National Assembly in 2000-2001 was 54 weeks for written representations and 189 weeks for inquiries.
