Called-In Planning Applications

The Secretary of State may give directions under section 77 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, requiring applications for planning permission, or for the approval of any local planning authority required under a development order, to be referred to him instead of being with by local planning authorities.

The Inspectorate took on the procedural stages of these cases - known as 'call-ins' - from the Government Offices with effect from on 1 April 1999. Table 24 shows the number of called-in applications referred to the Inspectorate, the number withdrawn, the number returned to the Government Offices and the number of cases decided in the year.
